Full-day tour to Tlacolula Market + Yagul Archeological site + Tule tree (Sunday's only)
Description
This tour begins at one of the most colorful and emblematic places in all of Oaxaca. This gigantic market, located 35 minutes east of Oaxaca City, is the largest and considered the oldest indigenous “tianguis” (market) in the state in Oaxaca state. The Tlacolula market is located in an ancient Zapotec settlement, a place that has served for centuries as the weekly market for residents from nearby and faraway villages to visit on Sundays to buy and sell goods.
During our walk through the market, we will sample regional food, fresh fruits (some of which you are likely seeing for the first time), fried grasshoppers (optional!), egg bread, and refreshing drinks such as herbal tea, honey water and corn-based tepache.
For the carnivores among us, we can also sample a variety of grilled meats.
In addition to the colorful presentation of fruits and vegetable and the delicious aroma of cooked foods, you will see local residents in traditional clothing and speaking in Zapotec language. The embroidery design and colors on the aprons are unique to each village.
After the market, we will visit the nearby Temple of the Assumption and Chapel of the Lord of Tlacolula, the construction of which began in the 16th century. The interior of the church displays beautiful plaster, wrought iron decoration, and silver and gold decoration.
Our visit to the market and temple will last approximately 2 to 3 hours.
Once the tour in Tlacolula is completed, we will drive a short distance to the Yagul archaeological zone. This is a very ancient site. Researchers report that its ecosystem has provided food for inhabitants for more the 8,000 years. The landscape of the alluvial valley was the site of agricultural development approximately 5,000 years ago.
In addition, the importance of the Yagul area lies in its rich manifestations of both Zapotec and Mixtec cultures. In the caves and rock shelters, we will see cave paintings and archeological evidence of residential complex that included funerary and military outposts
The tour in the Yagul archaeological zone lasts approximately 90 minutes.
Last but not least, we will visit the Tule tree – the widest tree in the world. In the middle of the central plaza of Santa Maria del Tule stands the famous ahuehuete, affectionately called the “Tule Tree”, which is over 2,000 years old. Its trunk is over 120 feet in diameter. It takes over 30 people to circle around it and its shade can protect 500 people. A wonderful sight not to be missed!
We hope you enjoy this amazing and unforgettable experience.
